While hiking in the mountains recently I met an 80 year old man who invited me to visit his mountain top green tea farm. The man bought and cleared the land at the top of this mountain over 60 years ago and has been climbing the mountain ever since to tend and care for his fields. He is one of the last tea farmers in the area to harvest all of his tea by hand and he uses no machines to assist in bringing the tea down the mountain. The large basket he carries on this back will be filled with the day's harvest before he returns home in the evening. This man was very proud of his tea fields and his family's long history of farming the mountains of the Japan Southern Alps.

Not many people are aware of it, but in all actuality, the tea bag was invented by an American and not by the English, Japanese, or the Chinese.

Hello goggyygmailcom, This farmer receives some help from his wife though nobody else in the family is helping. As is typical in this area all of the young people in the family have left for jobs in the city leaving the old folks on their own. After this man passes the land will most likely be abandoned and return to nature. This farmer sells his tea into a larger collective which is then resold for use with a variety of teas. I'm afraid that I do not know any of the brand names. Kurt

Great video.. It actually makes me jealous that I'm not in his family - so I could take turns doing what he does. ;) I wish your video was much longer, to see more of what he does. Which brings me to the question: Is he the only member of the family to go up there regularly?? Anyhoo.. Makes me enjoy my various green( black) teas even more knowing the care involved with such amazing individuals. BTW - do you know the estate name to buy from him?

GREAT to see how much this Japanese 'tea-farmer' respects nature! Like it a lot! JAPAN is BREATHTAKING, this vid shows only a piece of all that beautiful landscape Japan has! Thank you for sharing this amazing vid! My respect to this farmer!

I would have loved to go on that hike, but it amazes me those people must do this once a day - the climb doesn't phase him, especially considering he's like what, 60 years old?

by the way, that small Japanese man is soooooooo cute with his large basket. Your Japanese is pretty good.
