It depends on your perspective. Are you looking from a micro or macro scale? Water and oil are very similar when comparing liquids and solids.
If you're saying Korean uses an alphabet, then Japanese uses three. Nonetheless, each symbol/character has a meaning in both Korean and Japanese.

What? Korean and Japanese are very similar. They're not "exactly the same" but they're as similar as English is to Spanish. And they both use symbols.
