He sounds much better with a backing band, imo. Without, it just sounds like he's practicing. No dynamics, very little vibrato, mostly just straight 16th note scalar runs. Paul Gilbert is a great technician but I personally prefer his teaching material, his music just doesn't do it for me at all.
